In college I purchased a quilted-looking duvet cover from Ikea for cheap cheap cheap. I used it, I loved it, and then I moved across the country and was looking for something different.
And so it sat in my closet, waiting for a second life.
The Tiktok that inspired me to diy curtains said to hem the bottom based on how tall I wanted them to stand.
I Ritt dyed an old bedsheet into this blue fabric. I thought the color was too dark and ugly so I didn't use it.
This was my old duvet cover from college. I kept the duvet but saved the cover to use for a project... Today's its big day!
The excess fabric was folded in on itself a few times in order to raise the curtains off the ground a little bit. This also allows me to change the length if I so choose.
I used the ugly dyed bed sheet to create some loops for the curtains to attatch to the rod with. They are pretty lazily put together with raw edges and awkward attatchement points.
I sewed together some simple strings that could hold the curtains in an open position. This way I didn't have to keep them fully open or fully closed... The best of both worlds!!
This was one of the first projects I have worked on that was larger than myself. Besides forgetting to vacuum the floors before starting and getting random floor bits all over my project, I think it went off without a hitch.
I kept the plans extrememly simple and salvaged as much fabric as possible. I kept the edges hemmed with the ability to extend or shorten as I see fit. I'm not sure if these curtains are a permanent solution in my home moving forward, but they certainly get the job done.
I've taken plenty of midday naps and am happy to report that they filter in just enough light to let me sleep. I love the way they scatter light in my room, it gives quite a nice glow through the pattern.
On my next project I need to work on perfecting my craft. Although this is a pretty low stakes project, I find that I get lazy with the construction. If you zoom into the pictures, the loops are pretty half assed and could be reinforced. I know this is just a project for me, but it would just add that bit of professionality to the craft that I'm so looking for.
