Do regular clothes hold meaning? How can clothes that are bought from large scale retailers be customized or personalized to a person's style? Can I customize my clothes in a way that adds value and identity without compromising on style?
These are some questions I asked while designing my patchwork for my denim jacket.
This project started with a lot of separated components. I had the jacket, a large scrap of duck cotton, photos printed on cotton, art work printed on cotton, embroidery floss, etc. One Sunday I asked what if I put them all together and created a large panel.
I printed my favorite photos that I have taken on a cotton printer. These prints were selected and collaged in place.
A talented friend of mine, Sarah Gallagher, created beautiful collage work from magazine clippings. These were scanned and printed on cotton.
I'm still learning embroidery and this was a good exercise in trying different stitches and shapes.
This jacket is one of my favorite pieces of clothing I own. I find it particularly interesting that before I applied the patchwork to the jacket's back panel, it was nothing more than a denim jacket. As soon as I added the panel, it became a statement to my creativity. This relationship was an exciting revelation as I wasn't expecting to find it so easy to customize my own clothing.
